Harold H. Howell’s body was not recovered and he was declared as being killed in action thus becoming the first person from Neshoba County to be killed in World War II. After his death, his personal effects were given to his mother, Janie Howell. Upon hearing the news his brothers Ray and Gerald “Boots” Howell both joined the eagerly joined the military.
Howell’s family is memorialized in the Tablets of the Missing in the Cambridge American Cemetery. His family also made a memorial for him by giving him a grave in Philadelphia's CedarLawn Cemetery.
Howell was posthumously awarded the Air medal and a Purple Heart.
